Questions people ask
Do I need ID to vote?
No. Staff look you up by name and address. Bring your EasyVote card if you have one, but it is not required. If you are not on the printed roll, you fill in a special vote declaration.
Can I enrol on election day?
No. For the 2026 election enrolment closes at midnight on Sunday 25 October, 13 days before election day. If you miss it you cannot vote in this election.
What is the EasyVote card and what if I enrol after 4 October?
It is the card posted to enrolled voters. If you enrol or update your details after 4 October you cast a special vote instead, which is counted a little later. It still counts.
I moved house. Am I still enrolled?
Maybe. If your mail was returned you may be on the "dormant roll". Update your details at vote.nz or call 0800 36 76 56 (free, any time) before advance voting starts. Addresses do not update automatically for 2026.
What are the voting hours?
Election day voting places are open 9am to 7pm on Saturday 7 November. Advance voting runs from Monday 26 October to Friday 6 November. Opening hours for advance voting places vary, so check vote.nz for your local place.
Can I vote from overseas?
Yes. You must be enrolled by 25 October. Download your voting papers from vote.nz/overseas, or vote at an overseas voting place between 21 October and 7pm on 7 November (NZ time).
How do I find my electorate and voting place?
