1 / 10Work a public holiday: time and a half

If you work a public holiday you get at least time and a half of your relevant daily pay.

2 / 10Plus a paid day off in lieu

If the public holiday would normally have been a working day for you, you also get a paid alternative holiday.

3 / 10A 6 to 10 hour shift: two rest breaks

You get two paid 10 minute rest breaks and one unpaid 30 minute meal break.

4 / 10Rest breaks are paid at your normal rate

Paid rest breaks pay what you would earn working. Meal breaks are unpaid unless your agreement says otherwise.

5 / 10Every employee needs a written agreement

Your employer must give you a written employment agreement and a signed copy.

6 / 10No agreement can mean a $1,000 fee

An employer who does not provide a written agreement can face a $1,000 infringement fee.

7 / 10Raise a grievance within 90 days

You must raise a personal grievance within 90 days of the issue happening or you becoming aware of it.

A personal grievance for sexual harassment must be raised within 12 months.

9 / 10Employer KiwiSaver minimum is 3.5%

If you are eligible, your employer must contribute at least 3.5% of your gross earnings.

10 / 1016 and 17 year olds now get employer KiwiSaver

From 1 April 2026 employees aged 16 and 17 qualify for employer contributions of 3.5%.
